On October 16, Burbank Bob Hope Airport launched its SKIES OF FREEDOM Pavilion Memorial Brick Campaign. The campaign is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for interested donors to memorialize their Airport legacy through personalized bricks in the Airport’s new SKIES OF FREEDOM Pavilion, due to open Summer 2014. Bricks are available in two colors (Regimental Red and Landmark Gray) and two sizes (4” x 8” and 8” x 8”). The 4” x 8” brick includes 1-3 lines of text and costs $98. The 8” x 8” brick includes 1-3 lines of text, a choice of one engraved aircraft logo from a list of nine available historic aircraft, and costs $148. Each memorial brick will be prominently featured in the Pavilion and viewed by thousands of Airport visitors.
Keepsake replica bricks and custom-etched display cases are also available at additional cost. The keepsake replica brick is made of the same material as the installed Pavilion brick and includes a commemorative SKIES OF FREEDOM plaque adhered to the top of the brick.

On October 7, Airport staff and consultants informed the Airport Authority that the recommended size of the proposed 14-gate replacement terminal now under discussion is approximately 355,000 square feet. Earlier estimates determined a general range of between 325,000 and 385,000 square feet.
The 355,000 square feet specification results from identifying space requirements for various functions, services, and amenities recommended by the general public through surveys in 2012 and community workshops held this summer and fall, as well as discussions with the airlines serving Bob Hope Airport. Some of the recommended amenities include more restaurant choices and shops, improved baggage area facilities, and larger passenger waiting areas. Also included is additional space for security enhancements and administrative space for the airlines serving the Airport. The recommended space is 68% larger in size than the existing terminal, which is approximately 211,000 square feet. The existing terminal would be demolished after completion of construction of the replacement terminal.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the current terminal building is not far enough from the runways to meet current standards. The present terminal is 83 years old and does not meet current earthquake safety and design standards.
Besides improving terminal amenities while preserving the convenience of today’s terminal with the same number of aircraft gates, the terminal represents a capital investment of $300-400 million in the area by travelers, airlines, and the FAA. No local taxes are involved. It would lead to additional jobs in construction, transportation, and related services and act as a unique catalyst to attract a mix of the highest uses and jobs to the 58-acre Opportunity Site (the former Lockheed B-6 property) next to the terminal. It would also be a new “front door” for travelers arriving at Burbank and the San Fernando Valley.
Under the provisions of Measure B, an initiative ordinance passed by Burbank voters in 2000, a replacement terminal can only be built if and when Burbank voters approve its construction. In September and October, the City of Burbank and the Airport held a number of joint workshops and study sessions to gain community feedback on preliminary development concepts for the replacement terminal and the former Lockheed B-6 property.
With the help of outside terminal and development consultants, the City of Burbank and the Airport have proposed preliminary site designs centered on creating a positive economic and community impact on the greater Burbank area, with an emphasis on regional connectivity. The proposed replacement terminal is situated at a safe distance from the existing runways and would be easily accessible to pedestrians, cars, and rail passengers. Proposed development of the Opportunity Site includes concepts for mixed-use buildings, office spaces, industrial complexes, and retail and dining outlets. Community members have also advocated for the inclusion of theaters, auditoriums, and warehouses.
On November 14, the City Council and the Airport Authority will hold a joint meeting to discuss the project description for the replacement terminal and the Opportunity Site. The meeting will take place at the Burbank Community Development Building at 6 p.m.

Congratulations to the UCLA-Oregon sweepstakes winner! Victor N. of Los Alamitos was randomly selected as the winner of the Airport’s “Trip for Two to the UCLA-Oregon Game” sweepstakes. He and a guest received two tickets to the UCLA-Oregon game on October 26, two round-trip Alaska Airlines tickets from Burbank Bob Hope Airport to Portland, a hotel stay, and dinner for two at the Oregon Electric Station.
Woodbury University honored Burbank Bob Hope Airport and the Airport Authority with its 2013 Movers and Shapers Award on October 14. The award was presented to the Airport because its policies and programs have led to increased passenger convenience, reduction of noise and environmental impacts, economic stimulus to the Burbank region, and development of regional intermodal connectivity.
