In May 2000, Phase I of the Part 161 Study was initiated to achieve the goal of eliminating or significantly reducing the nighttime flight noise at Bob Hope Airport now and in the future. The Airport Authority authorized an outside consulting team to evaluate a restrictive curfew on all flight operations between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Phase II of the Part 161 Study began in September 2002. This phase included a benefit-cost analysis and consideration of alternative curfews for submission to the FAA. Benefits of a mandatory curfew at Bob Hope Airport were identified based on the consulting team's experience in similar studies, previous environmental studies conducted by Bob Hope Airport, as well as comments from local residents received at public hearings. Costs of a mandatory curfew were identified by calculating loss of income from all cargo, courier, general aviation and passenger airline flights affected by the curfew. Note that these conclusions were amended in later Study activity. Click on "So What's Next" on the left side of this page. |
